Meet LaShira Norwood: Fulton County Sheriff’s First Black Female Sniper

Based upon her academic training, she was headed to the healthcare industry. Yet, a friend encouraged her to look into law enforcement.  To the surprise of many, she had never fired a gun before her deputy training. Once she accomplished her first hurdle, she joined the S.W.A.T. team in 2016, which marked a year after she started.

Her desire to become a sniper was immediate. She trained and practiced everyday after work for a year. Precision is paramount for the week long sniper certification she would undergo at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth. The weapon used in her craft is a Remington 700. Initially, many of her male classmates were skeptical of her skills. After hearing the constant ping of her hitting the long-range targets, thoughts changed quickly.

Norwood is assigned to the sheriff’s office’s law enforcement division, where she executes warrants, serves civil papers and enforces state and federal laws. She is committed to making contributions and improving her skills. It is very apparent when she’s shooting at the range. She wears pink headphones to ensure that everyone knows she’s female.

This is a really cool story. Working in a male dominated industry has challenges of its own, but to add in being a woman of color…wowzers! Keep up the great work!
