Making Concealed Carry a Habit

Philip Smmith | National African American Gun Association

For many African American gun owners, protecting themselves in public is one of the key motivators to conceal carry a gun. We want to have an extra level of public protection for ourselves and our families. Additionally, we prefer that not everyone knows we’re “packing” while running errands, shopping, or hanging out with the family.

I get why we want to be anonymous as I conceal carry too.   A firearm is the ultimate insurance policy if a dangerous circumstance arises. However, far too often, we rush to leave our homes and don’t realize until we are miles away that we’ve forgotten our weaponry. In many instances, gun owners refuse to go back to retrieve it.

The reason being, we haven’t fully developed a “Firearms Mindset and Habit,” which some call it a “Warrior’s Mindset.” Carrying your gun every time you leave the house should be like taking a breath.  The feeling should be similar to the way we think about our cell phones.  It too goes everywhere with us.  Everywhere!

A few small tips include placing notes around the house and developing a ritual to remind us to get your guns before  leaving. If you are consistent over time, you will begin to feel uncomfortable when not carrying a weapon on your person or in a vehicle.

The main objective of a conceal carry habit is the desire to live and the universal morality of self – defense. Possessing a gun doesn’t guarantee safety but it at least provides us with a fighting chance to survive.

In my opinion, having a conceal carry mindset means the following:

I will protect myself and my family if necessary.

I am my first line of defense and will obtain appropriate training for self-preservation.

I will take gun ownership seriously and exercise safety when storing, cleaning, or discharging a firearm.

Definitely my mindset. Even before I carried a firearm, I couldn’t leave the house you a pocketknife or a fixed blade/sheathed knife. I fly pretty often and always feel out of place during those trips. Great article

Thank you for this article. I am a new gun owner, and like most of us I am trying to become more comfortable with my gun and carrying it with me.

Thats good information, that requires habit forming tendencies. It take a while but once you develop the habit, you will feel naked without it.

Just wanted to know what NAGGA is doing to help push for lighter CCW laws and requirements in each state? This is a big road block for many of us in the African-American community. Having access to fire arms is one thing being able to CC to provide protection for arising situations is another.

Good information, carrying concealed is a habit that requires action. We have to be responsible for our own self protection.

Some time I scared to conceal carry. If I get stopped by police/sheriff and they already know i have a licensed to carry things jut can get out of hand even if I am in compliance. Just not safe to carry even if you are legal and in compliance being a black man. History has shown that.

You are absolutely correct. Thanks for that tip. I’m taking my conceal carry a bit further by making sure that one of my firearms is always in the car in addition to the one I carry on my person. This way I can never forget to be armed. Keep up the good work. I’m very proud to be a member of NAAGA!

Thank you! I so needed this encouragement.

What are suggestions for handling when you run into environments (stores, banks, etc) that have posted “no firearms” notices? I don’t have a safe in my car and I hate the idea of moving my pistol from my person to the car in public.

I have a CCW, several short barreled weapons but do not carry all the time because of insurance. Who do you recommend that is reliable, who back you up if you do end up using your weapon?

There are several CCW Self-Defence prepaid legal services for permit and non-permit gun owners. The basic cost averages about $120 annually to provide the legal services essential when (if) you’re involved in a self-defence shooting. I would highly recommend CCW Safe rated by the BBB A+ and gun trade magazines as #1. Nonetheless, you should do your due diligence to compare as many prepaid legal services as possible than by all means purchase a plan that fits your needs. All the services I’ve researched are less than $500 annually and most offer monthly payments.

Hello. As a new conceal carrier I appreciate the article. Short and to the point. It helps reinforcement why I took the step to become a responsible conceal carrier. Also, I like the cell phone analogy. That was on point.

This opinion is short and concise. This is exactly the mindset I have when leaving home to take my kids to school, going running on the trail or maybe even to the mailbox. It is my other card that I don’t leave home without!

My weapon is like my I.D Icarry it at all times to keep me safe & family members safe. There are 3 of us who have our gun permits in my home but my wife & son don’t carry only me. Why don’t they conseal carry one reason is you have to be mentally and as a Retired Pennsylvania state Correctional Officer SCI Greaterford I relay on that experience to maybe help me survive and maybe give me a fighting chance that I might get to go home to my family. Also I do belong to a gun range and I go shooting 2 times a month plus Youtube has a lot of self defense videos I just don’t limit my training around a gun but othe self defense tactics such as hand to hand useing a knife for self defense etc. I keep an open mind when it comes to my protection everything gose.

My words were cut off I was saying you have to be mentally prepared in the event you use your gun protecting your self or others . My training in the Army & othe training in my 20 years experience in Law Enforcement & Private security has prepared me for what I might have to do in defense of myself or others.

This was a very good article. I can’t stress the importance of having a warrior mindset when it comes down to concealed carry everyday. This is something I teach to all of my students and it’s a point worth driving home until it becomes apart of our natural life.

There are many different ways to conceal carry but belly ban holsters work best for me. I love the feel and the ease with which I can move with it on and still stay incognito. My holster and my gun is like American Express, I can’t leave home without it.

I do agree with how we should be diligent in carrying concealed. We must also stress when not to carry because it’s second nature. Travel restrictions especially in airports. I’ve read to many stories of high profile individuals who get caught at TSA Checkpoints because they forgot they were carrying concealed.

The most sought after Firearm ammunition is readily available if you shop for it online. Albeit, all distributors may not ship to your location, nonetheless you can still purchase self-defense and training ammunition. That said, the availability to purchase “bulk” ammunition of the most popular caliber “9mm” is limited because of the millions of gun owners who own 9mm firearms. Likewise, .223 / 5.56 AR-15 caliber ammunition is pricey because of the demand. Again, firearm owners have access to ammunition if you’re willing to search for it, and be willing to pay a little more for it. The point is, “get what you need.” So, here’s a few online retailers:Bulkammo.com(all calibers);Freedom Munitions (.223/5.56 under a $1 per round); Gunbroker.com(all calibers especially 22lr under 20 cent per round ); Opticsplanet.com(.223 limited). I’m sure you’ll find what you need without breaking your budget.
