The Original Queens

A Royal Legacy

According to news outlets, women have been buying firearms in record numbers, particularly since 2020. Even more, black women stand out as the demographic most influencing this trend. Many cite political uncertainty, a rise in crime, and a general concern for safety as their main reasons. Other experts note that for the first time in history, black women are the most educated demographic in America, leading to increased independence and thereby a more sober realization that self-care must include self-defense.

While purchasing trends certainly indicate the signs of the times, the history of black women and firearms is rich and certainly not new. From resisting colonists in the central regions of Africa to fighting against Jim Crow laws in the South, black women have always been invested in self-preservation. Throughout history, there are numerous examples of women who understood that firearms empower people to resist oppression and acquire freedom, when necessary.

The National African American Gun Association recognizes and celebrates this history. As women of color recognize their need and exercise their rights to defend themselves and loved ones, we honor those who have gone before while continuing to encourage those who are making strides now to uphold the rights granted by the Second Amendment.
